Valentine’s Day is a ceremony of lovers to renew their love and commitment to each other. At the same time they exchange gifts and here I am going to illustrate the given pie chart to see what the most popular gifts are given by lovers.

As for men, the three top gifts are other stuff that are considered special gifts and are worth 25% of the total chart. Cards and flowers come next with 18% and 16% respectively. On the other hand women’s three major gifts are cards. Candy and other stuff which measure from 27%, 21% and 17% respectively. For men candy and jewelry have the fourth and fifth places in gifts as their cut are 14% and 10% where flowers and perfume cologne come in fourth and fifth place in women’s gifts . Lingerie, Spa/personal care and perfume come at the end in men’s gifts whereas jewelry, lingerie and spa/personal come at the end in the women’s gifts.

Finally, we see that gifts from men or women are mostly similar but each prefer something over other and that depends on their taste and style.

UK budget: where the money goes

In this essay, I will explore the UK budget information and show how the money is spent by the government.

The total budget is £315 billion in 1996. The social security has the biggest segment of the total budget expenditure, £100 billion. Health and personal social services comes next with £53 billion of expenditure.The education is in 3^rd place with £38 billion. Other expenditure and debt interest cost £23 billion and £25 billion respectively, where defense is £22 billion. The rest of the expenditures were distributed to the law and order, industry, agriculture and employment, and housing, heritage and environment which is considered small compared to others and they cost £17 billion, £13 billion and £15 billion respectively.

From that we can see that three categories have the biggest cut of the budget where the rest have the small cut.

Reflection on process writing

When the task is to describe a process using the passive voice/mood, we must use the present passive.

This is formed by using is or are with the past participle, e.g.

Orange juice is stored in a fridge.

The oranges are transported in trucks to the factory.

If we fail to use the passive when we are specifically asked to do so, we are dropped a quarter band, which can mean the difference between passing & failing.

How to change a tyre

Getting a flat tyre is inconvenient, whether it happens in town or in a remote location. It’s important to know how to change a tyre, especially if there is no garage nearby to help out.

This is what must be done. First, the wheelnuts must be loosened. This should be done before the car is raised, using the jack. Next, the car is jacked up. Then the nuts are removed. After that the wheel is removed and the spare tyre is put on. Then the nuts are tightened and the car is lowered. The nuts are tightened one last time for safety. Finally the tools are tidied away. You are now ready to drive on.

As you can see, changing a tyre is a very simple and straightforward process, but you must follow the above steps in the correct order, particularly the first step of loosening the wheelnuts before you raise the vehicle.

A Journey from Brunei to Sarawak

Thirty years ago, Hedley, with his wife Mary and daughter Katie, visited the Niah Caves in Sarawak, East Malaysia. They travelled by car, ferry, and boat.

They sat off from Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital of Brunei and drove to the border with Sarawak. They crossed two large rivers by ferry. Stopped in Miri for launch and then continued to Niah, a small river township. Then they hired a small boat and sailed upriver to a government rest house, where they spent the night. They ate with the small group of scientists who lived in the rest house and shared the cold drinks they had brought with them in a cool box. It was a remote spot, deep in the jungle. They slept in bunk beds with no air conditioning. It was a novel experience.

The next morning, they walked along a jungle path for half an hour until they reached the Niah caves. Inside the caves, which were very high, they saw men who climbed up tall bamboo poles. The men wore lights on their hats because it was so dark. At the top of the poles they scraped off birds’ nests from the roof of the caves. The nests were collected by their mates on the cave floor and packed into sacks. These nests were later sold and made into bird’s nest soup. A Chinese delicacy.

That afternoon, they said goodbye to their new-found friends in the rest house and sat off on the long drive home. It was quite an adventure and one they would never forget.

Reflection on procedure

Before joining the college I used to write many emails and reports for my work, and all that time I was satisfied with my English writing; in fact I always take a long time when I need to write something and that is because I try to make it simple and direct to the subject. I used to compare my writing with all my colleages and the truth is I found many are better than me.

After joining the college and taking classes in English, I found myself familiar with many words and some other phrases that are used for similarity, contrast  and writing procedures that I truly never thought to use them earlier in my writing. Now I feel that I can write whatever I want in a shorter period than I ever used to do. Also I am able to organize my writing by dividing it into an introduction, body and last the conclusion.

How to make a butter

Butter is one of the most favorite food items that almost every home has in their food shelf because it can be used alone or with some other ingredients to make a delicious sandwich or it can be added as an ingredient in meals for a tasty flavor. Today I will write a guide for making butter in your home.
First, bring and boil fresh milk that has a good quality and fat, and then leave it to cool.
Second, separate the cream and churn it properly. Third drain the buttermilk from the butter using a separator and then place the butter in a jar. Fourth, wash the butter with cold water to remove remaining buttermilk. Fifth, add a small amount of salt for flavor and finally cut, wrap and store the butter in a fridge.
Now, you are ready to use your delicious butter for your food or even as an ingredient in your cooking plates.
